AROUND 680 students will graduate from Anniesland College tonight.

Proud friends and families will gather for the glittering ceremony at Mackintosh Church at Queens Cross in Glasg-ow's Garscube Road.

In addition to rewarding full-time NC students at the college's main building in Hatfield Drive, the event recognises the achievements of those students in communities across Glasgow, including Milton, Ruchill, Yoker and Whiteinch.

One woman who will be celebrating is Sharon Buckle, who completed the NC Home Interior Design at the Ruchill Community Learning Centre, which is managed by the college.

When the 45-year-old joined the class she had been made redundant from her job managing a beauty salon and was living in temporary accommodation with her daughter, Ellie, 9.

"I'd moved up to Glasgow from London with my partner but things didn't work out, and everything happened at the one time," said Sharon. "But I'm much happier now - Ellie and I have moved into a permanent home in Blairdardie, and I've learned new skills and boosted my confidence again.

"The college has been very supportive."

Sharon suffers from severe rheumatoid arthritis, which causes her considerable pain in her joints.

"It's something I have lived with since I was 14, and it can make walking very difficult," she says.

"Everyone at the college was very accommodating."

The highlight of the course was a placement in the props and costume department of Scottish Opera, with support from Anniesland employment advisor Lisa Fox.

The company was so impressed with Sharon's work, they have said they will contact her should suitable work come up in future.

"That was fantastic," says Sharon. "You're given a list of things needed for a particular production, and it's just a case of finding them but you have to make things too, which I found fascinating."

Sharon is looking forward to tonight's ceremony, adding: "I loved the course - I hope it will lead to a whole new career for me." All the students graduating tonight from Anniesland College
