HAMILTON Accies took a step in the right direction with their win over St Mirren at the weekend and midfielder Simon Mensing believes the victory could prove to be the catalyst for a consistent run of results.

Billy Reid's side almost snatched a point when they played Celtic the previous weekend and while they didn't play particularly well against St Mirren, they were able to get the victory that mattered.

Next up is a derby clash with high-flying Motherwell and Mensing can't wait to face his former side.

"It is testament to Jim Gannon just how well they have done this season with a very young squad of players," he said.

"They have had a tremendous start to the season and I am sure they will come to us with a lot of confidence and an expectation that they will win the game.

"We felt that we didn't play that well at the weekend against St Mirren but whereas in previous weeks we have acquitted ourselves well and the taken nothing, we managed to put the ball in the net and that is all that matters.

"Confidence-wise it means a lot to us. We know we can do better than that and we have to strive now to find a bit of consistency and start moving up the table.

"We feel that we are definitely good enough for that and the position we are currently in, second bottom, doesn't do us justice."

He added: "Of course, you have to prove that and getting a result against Motherwell, who have been one of the in-form sides, would be a way to do that."

The game against the Fir Park side is one that Mensing is particularly looking forward to, given the time he spent with Motherwell before switching to their Lanarkshire rivals.

However, getting a result is more important to him because of what it would mean to Accies rather than the fact that it would enable him to get one over his former team.

"It is a derby game and it is the type of game that the fans and the players really look forward to," he said.

"There is a bit of extra spice from my own point of view because I had a spell at Motherwell, but it is the derby aspect of it that has everyone at the club geed up for it.

"As I said, what Motherwell have done this season has been a big surprise to everyone and the results they have got have been fantastic.

"But we always fancy ourselves when it comes to playing at home and there is no reason why we can't go out and give them a real good game.

"We have had a few battles with them since we came up to the SPL and I am sure that this one will be no different.

"If we could get a decent result it would give us something to start building on and look to get the points that will help us move up the table to a position that we feel reflects where we should be."
