The current classrooms, which were built in 1939, will be replaced with a state-of-the-art facility on the pitches beside the current school at Springhill Road, Garrowhill.

Local politicians and the head teacher Richard Buchan welcomed the new build.

Mr Buchan said: "It is really quite a historic day for us.

"We had sports day on the playing fields for the last time ever last Friday.

"The pupils will be able to watch it from the school as it emerges from the ground.

The 55-year-old fell inside Buchanan Galleries this morning.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 9.40am.
Part of the shopping centre was closed and security staff redirected customers away from the main doors at Buchanan Street.
A police spokeswoman confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances.
