Julie McElroy

Disability campaigner Julie McElroy has cerebral palsy which has resulted in walking difficulties along with a speech and hearing impairment and manual dexterity problems.

Julie has completed a series of groundbreaking achievements including trekking in the Himalayas and climbing Ben Lomond as part of a campaign to improve access and awareness of the great outdoors for those with disabilities.

She is studying for PhD in Assistive Technology and works as a research assistant on a project at the University of the West of Scotland looking into the legacy of Glasgow 2014 for disabled people.

For the Evening Times she is testing out all five para-sports to be showcased at Glasgow 2014.

We discussed what Bowls Scotland has learned from the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi, 2010 and the hopes of Bowls Scotland from Glasgow 2014. His role is clear, he said "I am not employed to play bowls. I am employed to look at development, management and performance. He pointed out "understanding the concept of bowls can be difficult for those not involved in the game". For the future, his vision is to modernise the game and move bowls forward in Scotland.
