A DENTIST is poised to open a dedicated clinic to correct crooked teeth and stop Glaswegians looking like TV character Ugly Betty.

Iain MacArthur will shortly open the Glasgow Inman Aligner Clinic which offers a new type of adult-only teeth brace that does away with need to wear hated train track' braces.

Ordinarily, adults who didn't get their teeth straightened when they were younger, would be forced to use the old fashioned type of teeth brace to correct crooked teeth. These can cost up to £5000 and must be worn constantly for up to two years. But new Inman Aligner brace is virtually invisible, a fraction of the cost at just £1500, and is worn for just 12 weeks.

Designed in Florida, the Inman Aligner brace has already transformed the lives of millions of Americans who had crooked teeth.

And Iain, 44, of Newton Mearns, believes he can help thousands of Glasgow patients, especially women, who didn't want to wear teeth braces when they were younger.

He said: "In Glasgow there are probably thousands of patients who either didn't get braces when they were younger or don't wear them.

"There are thousands of women with crooked teeth who would benefit from the treatment."

The brace, developed by US dental technician Don Inman, is similar to a gumshield, except that the acrylic casing that covers the teeth is transparent.

It uses a series of coiled springs to push the teeth into the correct position.

Patients using the new brace, which is unsuitable for younger people, have to wear it for between 18 and 20 hours a day.

The aligner can only be used on the four front or four bottom teeth.

The new clinic opened yesterday at Central Chambers in Glasgow's Bothwell Street and Iain, who has been a practising for 21 years, believes it is the only dedicated clinic in Scotland offering the Inman Aligner.

He said: "There's a few guys doing it in London, but they are doing it as part of their own practice. This is the first wholly dedicated clinic in the UK offering this type of alignment."
