FUNDRAISERS hit the road over the holiday weekend to raise money for Glasgow's hospice.

Teams taking part in the Brick by Brick Banger Rally, organised by the Prince & Princess of Wales, covered 500 miles around Scotland to boost the £6 million still needed to build the new £21m hospice on a site at Bellahouston Park.

Taggarts Motor Group sponsored the event, which aims to raise £10,000 towards the appeal, backed by the Evening Times.

Hardy competitors have got behind the wheel to tour around some of the country's most beautiful scenery, while taking part in Top Gear style challenges to earn points and prizes, with no car taking part costing competitors more than £300.

"The rally challenged the ingenuity, imagination, organisation and at times, sheer bravery of the contestants," said Heather Manson, fundraising manager of the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice.

"Competitors started from the hospice and finished there two days later via Inverness and Fort William."

As well as sending a team to take part, Taggarts provided technical and back up support for drivers to keep their cars on the road.

The company has also helped teams source their old banger.

"The hospice does a wonderful job and we were only too happy to get involved in a unique way to raise money," said Duncan McPhee, franchise director at Taggarts.

"We also wanted to make sure all the old bangers stayed roadworthy so we have sent two of our top technicians along to keep competitors on the road."
