TONIGHT'S the night for our local heroes from the south of the city to have their moment in the spotlight.

The second Community Champion Awards of 2014 takes place tonight at Pollok Community Centre.

Judges pored over the entries detailing good deeds and hard work done in the local area - this is the time for those stars to shine.

Evening Times columnist Michelle McManus will be compering the night and providing entertainment, with Lord Provost Sadie Docherty s guest of honour. Evening Times editor Tony Carlin, said: "The Evening Times' motto is Nobody Knows Glasgow Better. Not only do we report on the news, good and bad, that affects our city, we, like so many of our nominees, fight and campaign to make it better."

Categories in the sixth year of the awards cover everything from the Team Award and the Individual Award to Public Services, Uniformed Service, Senior, Young, Sports and Health and Wellbeing Award.

Finalists for the Team Award are Aberlour Youthpoint Glasgow, Daisy Chain Early Years Project, Home-Start Glasgow South Volunteers and The Saturday Cafe and Associated Clubs.

Nominees for the Individual Award include Anne Scott, Caroline Paterson, Joanne Donaldson and Mohammad Ibrahim.

In the running for the Public Services Award are Amina MWRC, Andy Tunn, Holiday Inn Express Glasgow Riverside and The Glad Cafe and Foundation. And for the Uniform Services Award, finalists are Andrew Small and Colin Ferguson. Health and Wellbeing nominees are Castlemilk Relaxation Centre, Jeely Piece Club and Momentum.

The Sports Award finalists are Active Life Club, Alzheimer Scotland Active Programme in partnership with Glasgow Life, Scottish Sports Futures and Whitacres Community Academy.

The Senior Award finalists include Ian McIntyre, Morag Harley, The Friendship Club and Tommy Malcolm. Finally, nominees for the Young Award are Daniel Wilson, Glasgow Disabled Scouts, Ryan Ledgerwood and Tinto Primary- Pupil Council.

"These awards allow us and our partners an opportunity to honour and thank those individuals and groups who have worked to make the south of Glasgow a better place to live, work and play," said Michelle.
