THE stars are out tonight for the grand final of the 2015 Glasgow Community Champion Awards.

In a glittering ceremony at the City Chambers, winners from each of the three local heats held around the city will be in the running for the top awards.

These are the unsung heroes in our local communities, the people who never think twice about going that extra mile for friends and neighbours.

Each year, in the Community Champion Awards, we celebrate their good deeds.

They may have made a difference by caring for others, campaigning for better services, or in general creating a positive environment.

The grand final will reward an overall champion in each of the eight categories, as well as a Special Recognition Award made by the Lord Provost Councillor Sadie Docherty and her award for community service.

Hosted by actress Libby McArthur, the event for more than 300 invited guests celebrates all that is great about the people of Glasgow.

"Over the past year we have celebrated the remarkable men and women, boys and girls who are the very lifeblood of Glasgow," said Rob Bruce, executive editor of the Evening Times.

"We have shared laughter and tears as we paid tribute to the amazing individuals who selflessly strive to make this city a better place to live and work."

On the shortlist at the grand final are Easthall Residents Association, Radiant and Brighter Community Interest Company and Walk a Mile in Our Shoes for the Team Award.

Finalists for the Individual Award include Audrey Campbell, Edward Kirkwood and Chris Woods.

In the running for the Public Service Award are Royston Youth Action, Crossroads Youth and Community Association and Nikki Scott.

Watch commander Allan Brown, Govan Community Policing Team and nurse Elaine Hamilton are all competing for the Uniform Services Award.

Mary Gahagan, Peter Davidson and Alec Watt are all finalists for the Senior Award.

Shortlisted for the Young Award are Beatroute Arts, Luca's Girls from Castlemilk High School and Erin Ryan.

Hopefuls for the Health and Wellbeing Award are Community Transport North East Glasgow Healthy Journeys, Givin' it Laldie and Common Wheel.

Active East, Glasgow Rens Cuckoo Basketball Club and Sapphire Gymnastics Club are all in the running for the Sport Award.

Partners of the event are Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Glasgow Housing Association, Glasgow Community Planning Partnership and Glasgow City Council.

"Without the vision, commitment and co-operation of these partners we would not have been able to pay such a fitting tribute to some of the unsung heroes who transform lives across Glasgow every day," added Rob.
