A GLASGOW recycling project which triumphed in the Evening Times Streets Ahead Awards is in the running for a prestigious national accolade.

Gorbals Recycles is competing with six other organisations from around the UK to win Best Environment Project in the National Lottery Awards.

Founded in 2004, the project has diverted thousands of tonnes of domestic waste from landfill and helped families on low incomes along the way.

Collecting donations from local households and businesses, they reuse and recycle by providing low cost goods to those most in need.

The project also runs a bicycle sales and repair shop, along with a newly opened charity shop. At this year's Streets Ahead awards, Gorbals Recycles won the Green Glasgow Business Award.

Moyra Morrison, founder and manager of Gorbals Recycles, said: "We are delighted - everyone works so hard to provide the fantastic and unique services we offer, so it means a great deal to the staff and volunteers to be recognised.

"The National Lottery has provided ongoing support throughout our development and the communities of Glasgow have been fully supportive of our work so we are hoping they will get behind us when it comes to the public vote!"

A second Glasgow group, Active East, is also among the finalists. The group, which aims to encourage more young people in the East of Glasgow to take part in sport and physical activity and build skills through volunteering Active East is the only Scottish project competing against six other organisations from around the UK to win Best Sports Project.

Kirsty Partridge, programme manager, said: "We're over the moon to have reached the final seven. With the Games just around the corner, this is a great chance to show everyone the real difference Active East is making."
