The Hoops stopper was outstanding last night as Celtic maintained their Champions League dream with an incredible 2-1 over Catalan giants Barcelona. Goals from Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt ensured a glory night at Parkhead, despite Lionel Messi's late strike.

But Forster played his part with some fantastic saves, leading Matthews to demand a full international call of duty.

He said:"Fraser was heroic for us. He has shown this season, not just last night, that he is a top, top keeper. I think there is no doubt that he definitely deserves his chance for England."

Forster denied Messi with two outstanding saves in the second period after also performing heroics a fortnight ago in the Nou Camp.

Matthews himself produced one of the performances of his career against Barcelona, a feat all the more impressive since he had to fill in for the injured Emilio Izaguirre and play on the left-hand side of defence rather than the right.

However, the Welsh international has credited the result to the spirit of the team rather than any individual performances.

"As a player it is without doubt the highlight of my career," he said. "I thought that as a team we played really well. We took our chances and defended with our lives.

"We needed to try and stay calm in those frantic last few minutes and we stuck together."

Celtic are now in second spot in Group G with seven points from their four games.

Next up is a trip to Portugal where Celtic take on Benfica before they conclude the campaign with a home game against Spartak Moscow.

And there is every chance now that Celtic's momentum could take them into the last 16 of the lucrative competition.

"It puts us in a good position now," said Matthews. "If we can play the way we did against Barcelona in our remaining two games then we will certainly give ourselves a chance."

The waves of negativity that washed over the Scottish game this summer as the Rangers crisis engulfed the country painted a poor picture of the SPL.

And Matthews believes that Celtic are due credit for flying the flag for Scottish football this year.

"It shows that Scottish football is not as bad as everyone thinks it is. It is a massive result not just for us but for Scottish football as a whole," he said.
