ADAM MATTHEWS reckons Celtic are already reaping the benefit of their mid-season break.

The Hoops full-back did not play in either of the games contested during the 10-day visit to Gran Canaria.

But he came bouncing back to action with a spectacular goal to set up Celtic for their 2-0 victory over Hamilton at New Douglas Park.

The Welshman reckons the overall performance of the team as they put the game to bed in the first hour was an indication of how determined they are to stamp their authority on the second half of the campaign.

"The first 60 minutes was one of the best we have played all season, especially in the first half, when we caused them a lot of problems and could have scored a lot of goals," said Matthews.

"We scored two good goals, and we're happy with the three points and the way we played.

"Now we will be looking to kick on against Motherwell on Wednesday."

The result, allied to Aberdeen's draw with Dundee, pulls the Hoops to within two points of the leaders, with two games in hand.

Matthews understands the need to test the resolve of a Dons side not used to being on top and said: "All we could do was apply the pressure, and that's what we have done, not just with the result but with the performance."

The 23-year-old was delighted with his own performance, capped off with a rocket shot for his goal.

He explained: "After I took my first touch, Broonie shouted, 'Shoot'.

"So I didn't think twice and, luckily for me, it went into the top corner.

"It was a nice strike, but the most important thing was winning the game."
