FORSTER (6) Early mishandle, but got away with it.

Not so fortunate when failed to hold Quagliarella shot, pushing ball to Matri to score opening goal. Bounced back to make some decent saves.

MATTHEWS (6) Nervous, indecisive start for young Welshman. Settled down before unfortunate to pull hamstring and be forced off early in second half.

WANYAMA (7) Played with usual energy and zeal alongside Wilson at back as replacement for errant Efe Ambrose, who missed bus to training on Tuesday night.

WILSON (7) Always available to take a pass and begin next move. Untroubled by two changes of central defensive partner.

IZAGUIRRE (5) Posted missing too often, all-too predictable consequence of desire to push upfield, which opponents anticipate. Booked, then dinked by Pirlo to let Vidal set up second goal.

COMMONS (6) Early chance for man tasked with supporting front men, but effort blocked. Found it hard to get time and space to pick telling pass, but kept plugging away before being replaced.

MULGREW (6) Birthday Bhoy given central midfield role to protect back-line before re-jigs caused by injuries forced him back into central defence.

KAYAL (6) Found Pogba a handful in midfield battles. Got header on target first half, but not enough power to beat Buffon.

LEDLEY (7) Usual grafting shift on left. Provided essential cover for Izaguirre on several occasions.

SAMARAS (6) Run of scoring in five consecutive European away games came to a halt, and at times looked forlorn figure as ball rarely reached him wide.

HOOPER (6) Too easily robbed of ball inside own half for opening goal. Re-directed Commons' shot, but thwarted when Buffon twisted to save. Failed by inches to connect with low Sami cross three feet from empty goal.

AMBROSE (5) Replaced Wanyama at break, then shuffled to right-back when Matthews went off.

FORREST (6) Came on for injured Matthews after 52 minutes. Pace, trickery and delivery a welcome addition to Hoops' limited armoury.

LASSAD (5) Given final 17 minutes as replacement for Commons. Little opportunity to shine.
