Celtic trip to Turkey leaving me cold

PERHAPS it's just the knowledge that, like most of us, I will be shivering through a typical Scottish January.

But, the decision to take Celtic to Turkey for a four-team tournament next month does leave me a bit cold.

I can understand the thinking behind escaping the worst of our winter for a week because having the sun on your back can work wonders for players at this stage of the season.

But, I can't quite get my head around agreeing to take part in a tournament with Galatasaray, Trabzonspor and Ajax.

Okay, it will not be treated too seriously by Neil Lennon and his players.

But, whenever Celtic go on to the pitch, Kris Commons and Co. are expected to perform, and there is always the risk of picking up knocks.

I'd have been much more in favour of them going to a training camp, where they could really relax and enjoy a few light training sessions.

I would imagine there will be a financial aspect to what they are actually doing in Turkey.

But, in the long run, the real benefit will be that the players will have had a break after playing 30-odd games already and will have their batteries recharged.

It won't be much of a 'holiday' for Neil, of course, because he will be keeping in touch with base camp to ensure he knows what is happening with the players he is trying to bring in during the January window.
