I WAS saddened to hear of the death of my old team-mate John Divers, a prominent figure in and around Celtic Park when I was coming up through the ranks as a youngster.

There was a bit of an age gap between us but I can still remember how big a name he was at the time.

John was an old-fashioned inside forward and a very skilful player. He was one of many talented players at the Hoops at that time.

John was held in very high regard by many at the club and went on to become one of the "Century Bhoys" by bagging more than 100 goals for Celtic.

Amazingly, his 100th strike was the opener in a 4-0 away win over Dundee United in 1965 that went down in history as the first goal in the club's legendary nine-in-a-row series of league title triumphs.

John later played for Partick Thistle but he will be known forever as a Celt and a big supporter of the club.

It was fitting he got such rousing applause from the fans before the Hearts game on Wednesday. A great tribute. My thoughts are with his family.
