THE prospect of the SFA taking internationals and cup finals away from Hampden has created quite a stir among fans.

Without being privy to the discussions taking place between Queen's Park and their tenants, I get the impression it's all about the SFA negotiating a reduction in the cost of their lease.

But it has brought back into the public domain the question of whether we actually need a National Stadium.

Fergus McCann always maintained we don't.

But millions were spent on redeveloping Hampden. And, though it does not generate anything like the atmosphere the old ground did - I played there in front of 135,000 - I still believe it has a role to play.

We need a neutral venue for cup finals. Internationals you can move around the country. But, when it comes to clubs playing one another, having the National Stadium ensures there are no arguments about anyone having an unfair advantage.

Celtic Park was fine for this season's Scottish Cup final, because Neil Lennon's side was not involved.

But remember the ill-feeling generated when Rangers were at home to Dundee United in their semi-final.

Historically, Hampden holds a place in our hearts, even if the current stadium has obvious shortcomings.

If you are seated in the South or North stands, the view is fine.

But, if you are behind the goal - as I was for the European Cup final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen in 2002 - you can feel a mile away from the action.

I was just relieved I was at the end where Zinedine Zidane netted his fantastic goal.
