WHILE there is no disputing Kris Commons is setting a very fast pace in the race to be crowned Player of the Year, he is not quite home and hosed.

If a ballot was taken today - and, in the case of the PFA vote, it's not that far away - he would win.

However, we are now in the part of the season where what you do has most impact, in terms of voting.

So, it is what happens in the next couple of months which will determine who walks off with the prizes.

Kris is an extremely strong contender and confirmed his form with two goals on Saturday, but there are others worthy of consideration, including his team-mate, Virgil van Dijk.

Unfortunately for the Dutchman, Celtic are defending so well as a unit that the part he is playing for the team can be overlooked.

Van Dijk also makes it look so easy that the work he is doing can be underestimated.

WE are not yet into February and there are still another four months of the season to go.

But already Kris Commons looks to be a certainty to receive the Player of the Year awards which will be doled out at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

Commons is in sensational form and took his tally for this term to 19 with a first half double on Saturday. It is very difficult to see another player in the SPFL Premiership, even if he picked up an injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the season, outstripping his achievements.

There are other candidates. Not least, Celtic centre half Virgil van Dijk who has been outstanding both domestically and in Europe for the Scottish champions. But the Dutchman has not, brilliantly though he has performed, entertained or excited in the same way that his 30-year-old team-mate has.

Commons would be a worthy winner no matter what he or his club do between now and the end of the season.
