Neil Lennon reckons Mikael Lustig has shown all the credentials of a world-class right-back - which is why he is desperate to sign up the Swede on a new deal.

Lustig has been one of Celtic's most consistent performers over the last year and his displays have not gone unnoticed.

There was interest from Russia at this stage of the season last year when Rubin Kazan were linked with a big-money move for the player, but Lennon is desperate to keep him at Celtic.

Lustig's performance in the Champions League as well as at international level may have put him in the radar of other clubs and Celtic are looking to put him on a longer contract as soon as possible.

"I think he is an outstanding player not just at domestic level but at European level too," said Lennon.

"He plays very well for his country and you can see why we have offered him a new deal. We'd be delighted to get him tied up on a longer deal because I think he is playing some outstanding football at the minute and he could fit in anywhere in terms of other leagues.

"He is a great all-rounder. His temperament and attitude is fantastic, his prowess in the air, his passing; he is everything you want from a modern-day full-back.

"He has been a great signing for us, but we want him to stay here because we've got a lot we can offer him.

"He has adapted to the British game superbly and has added so much to his game since he has come here.

"If I had one criticism of him it is that at times he is guilty of hitting the first man, but on Sunday he was the guy who put the ball of the day into the box for Joe Ledley's goal - which was my favourite - before scoring a world-class goal himself.

"He has been one of our most consistent players over the course of last season and into this one and hopefully we can get him tied up on a longer deal.

"There's no news on that front but we are optimistic."

Meanwhile, Lennon yesterday laid a wreath on behalf of Celtic near the scene of Friday night's tragic helicopter accident at the Clutha pub in Glasgow.

The message read: "They never die who live in the hearts they leave behind, also stating that the thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with the families of the bereaved at this desperately sad time."
