Lennon looks for answers on ref's performance

CELTIC are still looking for answers following the performance of Spanish referee, Alberto Mallenco, in Tuesday's Champions League match against Juventus.

However, manager Neil Lennon thinks it is futile to contact Uefa regarding the officials' unique interpretation of what constitutes a foul and a penalty when players are being manhandled as corner kicks come in.

"I want to know what the rules are," Lennon said, as he reflected on the fact Mallenco waved away protests about the treatment handed out to Gary Hooper and Scott Brown in particular.

Hooper was booked along with the main offender, Stephan Lichtsteiner, after one of many clashes in the area, and this incensed Lennon.

The Hoops boss said of the ref, who previously handled Celtic's 4-0 win over Artmedia Bratislava at Parkhead in 2005: "He was standing looking at it, and that can't happen.

"At any level of football, it's a penalty.

"I need some sort of explanation. I need someone from Uefa to explain the rules to me.

"I have been in the game 20-odd years, and maybe I don't know the rules.

"Is there any point asking for that explanation? I don't know.

"But I do think we should ask questions of the referee's performance."
