A GLASGOW design firm has been commissioned to create a line of clothing for British rockers Keane.

Design consultancy 999 and Fairtrade fashion label People Tree have been chosen by the band to create a limited run of 500 T-shirts to mark their forthcoming tour.

Keane asked People Tree to create the T-shirt to make more of the band's business Fairtrade.

People Tree approached 999 to design male and female versions of the product, taking inspiration from the band's album covers.

Keane frontman Tom Chaplin said: "We were delighted to work with People Tree and 999 on our tour T-shirts. We're passionate about being as ethical as possible, across our packaging and merchandise, so we thought it fitting to work with the world's most pioneering Fairtrade fashion brand."

The T-shirts were fashioned in India by Assisi garments and will be sold exclusively via Keane's website.

Costing £25, they will be available to pre-order from Monday and will be released from the beginning of August.

Some will also be available to buy on Keane's Canadian tour, which kicks off in September.

It's a first for 999, which has designed for the BBC, Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment, Digital UK and distiller Black Horse.

Aileen Geraghty, managing director of 999, said: "It was great to hear that Keane had got on board with People Tree and were continuing to put ethical thinking behind the production of their tour T-shirts.

"Keane's latest album artwork provided a natural direction for us and we explored a number of creative designs around this.

"The end result is bold and distinctive, while the attention to detail through different coloured stitching ensures a more than average approach to your normal band T-shirt."

The 999 group , based in Trinity Towers, Lynedoch Street, is also working with People Tree on a co-branded autumn/winter 2009 collection.

Antony Waller, People Tree's European public relations manager, said: "Having such a tried and tested relationship 999 made them an obvious choice to work on the designs for Keane."
