TEENAGERS on the rundown Glasgow estate made famous by TV duo Colin and Justin are fighting back - with rap music.
Steg G, a rapper and record label owner who grew up in Arden, has helped the youngsters produce a single which has already been played on Radio 1 and is becoming a huge success on the internet.
The 29-year-old launched the project after becoming furious at the way the design duo portrayed his community in their Channel 5 programme.
Colin and Justin On The Estate documented the pair's work with Glen Oaks Housing Association, refurbishing flats and setting up a youth centre.
But the four-episode makeover show sparked a storm of controversy with many residents saying they had made Arden look bleaker than it is.
Steg G got together a group of Arden teenagers and urged them to use music to show themselves in a different light.
Thirty young people from the estate worked together to make a hip hop video that gives a "warts and all" tour round their scheme.
The single, The Schemes, is now up on internet video site YouTube and had an impressive 442 views in only a week, helped by being featured on Tim Westwood's Radio 1 show.
Steg G said: "The reason we made this video is because we wanted to show the other side of Arden, the creative side.
"Sure, life in Arden is grim, and us singing about it ain't really gonna change anything, but we've created an outlet to express ourselves, raise awareness of the issues facing people in schemes, and hopefully others will follow our example."
Steg G is a well-known face on the estate and motivated the Arden young people to express how they felt about the negative publicity the show generated.
Using resources from his own production company, Powercut Productions, the video took five days to shoot with many of the teenage stars having featured in Colin and Justin On The Estate.
Steg G added: "We're not trying to glamourise life in Arden, but we are trying to make it a little cooler for the young people there, because Arden makes world-class hip hop.
"And now because of The Schemes song being played on Radio 1 people as far away as Brighton are hearing about a different life in Arden."
Steg, who has rapped with 50 Cent and Kanye West, also runs a radio training scheme with Sunny Govan Radio, which he hopes can benefit Arden kids.
