TICKETS are still available for 15 of the 23 sports that make up next year's Commonwealth Games.

But with a second round of sales opening yesterday, Glasgow 2014 tickets are expected to go fast.

Sports fans faced delays of up to 60 minutes to get online to buy tickets yesterday morning as round two got under way.

Top events which have already sold out include swimming and diving, mountain biking, track cycling and artistic gymnastics.

But sports such as hockey, netball and rugby sevens still have "medium availability".

While some people went online to express delight at netting the tickets of their choice, others took to Twitter to report delays as they tried to book seats.

The official Glasgow 2014 Twitter account had the message: "We're experiencing very high demand for 2014 tickets. The site is up and selling but the queues are large and we appreciate your patience."

Another said: "Call volumes to the ticketing hotline are very high. If you have access to the web, you could also try https://tickets.glasgow2014.com."

A spokesman for Glasgow 2014 said: "When the exclusive on-sale period opened, as expected we experienced a high volume of traffic on both our website and ticketing hotline.

"This resulted in a queuing system being put in place with customers, in some instances, having to wait around an hour to buy their tickets.

"However, since lunchtime on Monday there has been no queue on the website.

"We will continue to monitor the ticketing system."

Some jubilant fans took to Twitter to express their joy at landing their gold-dust briefs.

Ashleigh Harvey, from Glasgow, tweeted: "Going to the Commonwealth games #yeehaa weren't allowed a day off work unless we had a ticket!"

While Kirsty McLaughlin, also from Glasgow, posted: "Got tickets for the Commonwealth games!! #eeek #hockey."

From 10am on Monday, people who took part in the original application phase have had the chance to buy any of the remaining tickets which are being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis via the official ticketing website or ticket hotline.

APPLICANTS who got no tickets in the application phase have exclusive access to buy today.

From Wednesday the sale is opened to people who got some of the tickets they wanted in the first round then, from Friday, all the Glasgow 2014 ticket applicants are invited to buy tickets until 6pm on Saturday. Any remaining tickets will be put on general sale.

During the recent four-week allotted window for ticket applications, there were 2.3 million requests for up to 1m tickets.

Proving particularly popular was track cycling, receiving 25 times more requests than the number of tickets available.

There was also an excess of 100,000 applications made for the 100m men's final at Hampden Park.

Ty Speer, deputy chief executive of Glasgow 2014 said recently: "We're all set for this exciting new phase of ticketing during which there may be periods of high demand as people select and buy their sports and sessions.

"We will be working hard to process all orders as quickly as possible."

Those who wish to buy tickets should go to the Glasgow 2014 Ticketing website tickets.glasgow2014.com or through the Glasgow 2014 Ticket Hotline 0844 826 2014.
