SPECTATORS travelling to Hampden for athletics events enjoyed faster journey times after the weekend's delays.

Transport bosses laid on extra shuttle buses yesterday after ticket holders were forced to wait as long as two hours for park and ride buses on Sunday.

One spectator, who had travelled from Corby in Northamptonshire, said: "It's amazing the difference just one day has made.

"All of the previous problems seemed to have been sorted. It was easy."

However, as the mass exodus from the stadium got underway after the afternoon session, some spectators were stuck in queues at the nearby train station.

Mounted police escorted queues of fans who were moving towards Mount Florida station, hoping to catch trains to the city centre.

Meanwhile, there was praise from commuters for the smooth running of the city's rail services during the Games period.

Central, Scotland's busiest railway station, is facing the equivalent of the country's population in passenger numbers during the Games.

Around 130,000 sports fans had passed through the station by yesterday morning.

Rail bosses said daily passengers figures suggest the station could be on track to record more than 5million commuters during the 11-day event.

Today's park and ride facilities are sold out at Cathkin Braes, with commuters being urged to use shuttle buses from Buchanan Bus Station.

Meanwhile, Glasgow commuters are being urged to plan travel well in advance of Thursday's cycling time trials.

The number of planned road closures will increase with major diversions in place for bus routes.

A First Glasgow spokeswoman said: "We are encouraging our customers to plan ahead if they are going to watch the event. For customers not attending the event we're asking them to consider whether they need to change their normal travelling patterns.

"On Thursday we will be operating all of our services, but please be aware that a number of them will be diverted and there are a small number of areas that we won't be able to access.
