Team Scotland went medal crazy as the host nation celebrated a Commonwealth Games gold-rush.

Judo sisters Louise and Kimberley Renicks set the standard with a historic double win.

And swimmer Ross Murdoch earned his place on the podium after seeing off Glasgow's Michael Jamieson in the 200m breaststroke.

Swimming starlet Hannah Miley also won gold in the pool, smashing her own Commonwealth Games record in the 400m medley.

By the end of the night Scotland were proudly sitting in third place, with four gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Only England and Australia were ahead of the Scots, who enjoyed what is thought to be their best ever first day in competition.

As well as Jamieson there were silver medals for partially-sighted cyclist Aileen McGlynn and her partner Louise Haston, and judo star Stephanie Inglis.

Bronze medals went to three judo competitors, Glasgow's Connie Ramsay, veteran John Buchanan and late call-up James Millar.

The victories for Kimberley and Louise Renicks, from Kirkshaws, in Coatbridge, sparked wild celebrations at the SECC.

Dad Thomas, mum Agnes and middle brother Thomas Jnr, were right behind the girls as they fought their way to glory

Elder sister Louise, 31, won gold in the -52kg division just moments after Kimberley, 26, thrashed her opponent to take gold in the -48kg category.

"I have always believed I could get this medal," said Louise. "Now I've got it, my job is done, and I am feeling brilliant, really proud of myself.

"I watched a bit of my sister's fight, where she won and then got her medal, but I had to keep myself focused."

An almighty cheer rang out at the Tollcross Swimming Centre as Murdoch, from Alexandria, finished first and Jamieson picked up silver.

The Scottish one-two sparked loud celebrations from the Glasgow crowd.

Murdoch saw off stiff competition from Olympic silver medallist Jamieson, but both earned their place on the podium and added to Scotland's medal haul.

Stewart Harris, Chief Executive of sportscotland, said: "What an outstanding achievement it is to win 10 medals on the opening day.

"Spurred on by an incredible home crowd, Team Scotland is on track to deliver its best ever medal haul."
