Future News is a unique international event for aspiring journalists.

Teenagers from Scotland and the Commonwealth are reporting on the Games for futurenews.org.uk based at the Mitchell Library.

And today we feature one young writer's interview with Jack McConnell who was First Minister when the Games bid was launched.

Future News consortium includes Glasgow Life, the British Council and Glasgow Caledonian University with the Herald & Times Group as media partner.

The man who launched the bid for the Glasgow 2014 Games says it is great to see the city in full flourish.

Lord Jack McConnell, who was First Minister when the Glasgow proposal was lodged, said: "I was always convinced that the Commonwealth Games would bring energy and confidence and great publicity to Glasgow.

"The first few days have exceeded even my expectations. It is wonderful to see the city and Scotland embrace the friendly spirit and support all the teams."

Lord McConnell was appointed to the role of an Ambassador for Team Scotland for the Games. He said he is thrilled to be a part of it.

"Being an Ambassador for Team Scotland is the best role at the Games. I am loving the experience."

He also told Future News 2014 of his delight for Scottish athletes achieving medals in the Games.

He said: "I'm a huge fan of the para-cyclists and of swimmer Hannah Miley. So watching their success was special. And I am thrilled to see so many Scottish women winning at judo.

"I hope this is a big boost for their sport."

Lord McConnell only confirmed his passion for our swimmers and cyclists when he was spotted attending the swimming events at Tollcross International Centre and the cycling events at the Velodrome with Scotland's beloved comedian Billy Connolly on Friday.

Lord McConnell said: "Billy enjoyed the Opening Ceremony and he was very keen to enjoy the Velodrome and the swimming pool experience."

He also went on to talk about how the day went and Connolly's effect on Glasgow: "We had a really positive day together. He met some athletes and many volunteers and we cheered many competitors to success.

"He loves Glasgow and Glasgow loves him."
