n THE Commonwealth Games are the most successful sports event ever staged in Scotland.

At the halfway point, 1.2million tickets have been sold and more than 100 new Commonwealth records and five new World Records set.

After yesterday, 151 gold medals had been presented and more than 300,000 visitors have enjoyed the city's live sites. Over the weekend, nearly 700,000 people flocked to enjoy a wide range of sport and culture venues.

The Rugby Sevens competition attracted a world record-breaking Sevens audience of 171,000 over the two days of competition.

On Saturday and Sunday, 47,000 ­people attended the Merchant City Festival, 65,000 went to Glasgow Green, 30,000 turned out to cheer the marathon runners, 12,000 people watched the flotilla and 5000 went to Kelvingrove bandstand.

The Games website has attracted an average of 1m visits each day and there have been more than 1.3m mentions of Glasgow 2014 on social networks since the Opening Ceremony.
