BUDDING performers have just two days left to volunteer to be part of one of the world's biggest sporting events.

Organisers are urging anyone interested in being a member of the cast for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games to apply before the final application date on Friday.

Three thousand volunteers are being recruited to take part in the sporting spectacular in July and August this year, which is expected to attract more than one billion viewers across the globe.

Sports fans are expected to tune in on televisions, smart phones, tablets and computers to watch the myriad of sporting events taking place across Glasgow.

Eileen Gallagher, independent director on the Glasgow 2014 board and chairwoman of the ceremonies, culture and Queen's Baton Relay committee, said: "The chance to be part of the ceremonies cast at the Commonwealth Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity to present a vision of Glasgow and Scotland to a global audience.

"It is an opportunity for people from all walks of life to take part in something truly unforgettable, to learn new skills and enjoy a unique Games experience while helping to welcome the world to Glasgow."

Celtic Park in Glasgow's East End, which has a seating capacity of more than 60,000, will play host to the opening ceremony on July 23.

After 17 days of sport, including badminton, wrestling and athletics, the Games will draw to a close with the final ceremony on August 3.

Thousands will flock to Hampden Park to celebrate the finale, which has been described as festive and celebratory by organisers.

Anyone wishing to apply to become part of the cast should be aged 18 on, or before, March 1. and should also be able to attend auditions, which will be based in Glasgow, next month.

Despite the contents of both ceremonies being kept under wraps, volunteers can expect to be the stars of the show in one of the world's biggest sporting events.

No formal training or previous experience is needed to become a cast member, but recruiters behind the event are looking for energetic people who are willing to represent Glasgow and Scotland.

Both the opening and closing Ceremonies are being designed by Jack Morton Worldwide - the company behind other major sporting events ceremonies including those at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and other Commonwealth Games ceremonies in Manchester in 2002 and Melbourne in 2006.

Before the Games officially begin, there will be a parade of nations, with all the competing athletes, coaches and management teams taking part. The Queen's Baton Relay will also come to an end.
