Raised in a family of hockey players, 21-year-old Alex Wilson has been an avid player of the game since she was six.

Currently a full-time student at the University of Strathclyde, she won't be participating in the Commonwealth Games, but is looking forward to seeing the players compete. I caught up with the Milne Craig Clydesdale Western Ladies' player to find out about her love for the game, life balance, and who she has her bets on for Glasgow 2014.

Despite working toward a pharmacy degree, Wilson manages to maintain a healthy of balance of both studying and playing throughout her studies.

She said: "During exam time, there is barely much balance as I purely study. However throughout the (academic) year I am able to lift weights before going to uni, train in the evenings and play games at the weekend.

"As I have played since I was little this routine is normal for me and if I weren't on the pitch in the evenings, I don't know what I'd do with myself."

The 21-year-old captained the 1st X1 school team during her secondary school years and began playing for Scotland when she was 14.

"My older sister played hockey also and my dad was a coach so I was brought along one day to see if the gene had carried.

"Ever since I thrived upon it and and continue to be inspired by many international players," she said.

"I do feel very sad that I won't be competing in the games as it will be the most fantastic experience having the competition on home soil.

"It just gives me more motivation and desire to make sure I will be at the next Commonwealth Games and i'm sure it will be an exhilarating couple for weeks just being in the city."

Since the 2012 Olympics, hockey has captured many's attention and is gradually becoming a more profiled sport. Wilson believes Glasgow 2014 will enhance people's enjoyment of it: "Following the Games I feel that more people will be interest to learn about hockey's nature and watch live games from around the world."

The players selected for competing in July have been training full time since the start of April and flew to South Africa for test matches.

"It's difficult to say which team is likely to win as the competition between the women's teams it is very close, however I believe that England and Australia will be battling each other for the win." says Wilson when asked on who she thinks will prosper in the final.

"The match I'm most excited about is Scotland vs. England as games with the Auld Enemy are always entertaining and i'm sure the atmosphere will be electric.

"I'm looking forward to having my face painted and flying the Scottish flag."
