Set in Glasgow's East End on a 35-hectare site, the £150m Athletes' Village has been purpose-built to house 6,500 athletes and team officials during the Games.

As well as accommodation facilities, the village will offer ashops, a recreation area, dining hall, medical facility and other amenities.

Sustainability is at the heart of the design of the Village, with a 590-square-metre energy centre providing hot water for the accommodation as well as to the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The centre will help Glasgow 2014 to achieve two key sustainability commitments - to reduce waste and to lower carbon emissions through sustainable development and living.

This is a voluntary measurement rating for green buildings, which sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation.

Also helping towards the sustainability goal is the fact that 260,000 items of furniture, fittings and equipment will be recycled from London 2012 .

Not only will the Athletes' Village help participants to prepare for the Games, it will also provide new homes after the Games.

Around 1,500 houses and flats will be released onto the open and social housing markets, helping to create a whole new community in Glasgow's East End.The development will also include a new 120-bed care home for the elderly.

All of the houses will continue to be connected to the energy centre after the Games; as well as reduced heating bills, residents will have a constant supply of heating and hot water.
