LEGENDARY country singer Sydney Devine has become the latest celebrity to back an £8million campaign for a new cancer hospice in Glasgow.
The 67-year-old says he is "100% behind" our Big Build appeal for a new state-of-the-art Marie Curie centre.
Tomorrow (Wednesday), Sydney, who has sold 15 million records, will attend a party to celebrate 15 years of the Springburn Marie Curie Cancer Care shop.
Staff and volunteers at the shop in Springburn Shopping Centre will join customers and members of the public at the anniversary party.
Sydney, who will entertain the crowds and present long service awards to staff, said: "The party will provide the opportunity to thank the staff and volunteers who do a great job raising money to support the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow."
The Big Build aims to raise £8m for a new, state-of-the-art facility to replace the existing Marie Curie Hospice in the city.
Sydney, who has opened 30 Marie Curie Cancer Care shops in Scotland, added: "I'm firmly behind the Big Build, it's a fantastic campaign. This is my way of giving something back."
Launched in April, the Big Build fund, which is supported by the Evening Times, has got off to a flying start, and is well on the way to raising its first £1m.
The cost of building a new hospice is £16m, of which £8m has already been raised.
At more than 30 years old, the current hospice is showing its age and a modern facility is desperately needed. To refurbish the existing building would cost too much, and in the long term, it will be much cheaper to start from scratch with a new one.
The new hospice, which is to be built just a few hundred yards from the old one in the grounds of Stobhill Hospital will feature facilities including piped oxygen and ensuite rooms.
