SACHA KLJESTAN has jetted back to America to await news of his bid to become a Celtic player.

SACHA KLJESTAN has jetted back to America to await news of his bid to become a Celtic player.

The Chivas USA midfielder - who will rejoin the American national squad preparing for their friendly against Sweden this weekend - has been satisfied with his performance in the week-long trial he has just completed at Lennoxtown.

That included a bounce game on Wednesday when manager Gordon Strachan got the chance to see what the tall 23-year-old could bring to his squad.

Now Kljestan must sweat it out to see if Celtic are prepared to pay the £2.1million it would cost to make his move from California permanent.

Strachan said: "We are sitting down today, the coaching staff with Peter Lawwell, and we will put our heads together.

"As you can imagine the first person we will tell, whether it is good news or bad news, is Sacha."

That news could be delivered within 24 hours as Strachan tries to tie up as many bits of business as possible ahead of the final week of the transfer window.

Manchester City striker Ched Evans is also expected to be told within the next couple of days if Celtic are ready to pay the £1.2m the English Premier League club want for him.

Strachan revealed that chief executive Lawwell and head scout John Park are actively pursuing signing targets, while he himself is speaking to other managers.

But he dismissed reports he had enquired about three Peterborough players, Craig Mackaill-Smith, George Boyd and Aaron McLean with a smile that the call was actually made by a journalist.

"I think this has come from me saying that, if you had to go to Peterborough (for players) you would be asked £3m or £4m for them.

"I think someone has tested the waters for me and a reporter has asked for me."

Celtic have also been linked with 18-year-old Croatian striker Petar Skuletic, who is currently playing for Serbian club FK Teleoptik.

But another young hitman, Morten Nielsen, may have to wait until the summer before he gets his chance to become a Hoops player.

The 18-year-old Chelsea striker impressed when he spent a couple of days at Lennoxtown last week.

But, while the Dane would like to join Strachan's squad immediately, the club are reported to be more inclined to sign him on a Bosman and allow him to see out his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Strachan also revealed that a decision on whether or not Darren O'Dea would be allowed to join Burnley or anyone else on loan has still to be made.

Strachan understands the 21-year-old wants the chance to play regularly and said: "I am very sympathetic to Daren.

"He needs games now and has been inspirational in training. But we have a lot of games to play.

"If we can help him to bring his career on, then we will."

On the injury front, Strachan is happy to see Artur Boruc back in action for tomorrow's game against Hibs.

Lee Naylor, who also had to sit out the defeat at Aberdeen last weekend, is another in line for a recall.

Strachan said: "Artur seems to be all right. He has trained this week.

"Lee is also back and has been good in training this week."

Stephen McManus picked up a knock at Pittodrie, but has recovered and will be in his usual place against Hibs.
