A MULTI-MILLION pound housing development is planned on a former coal mining site.

A MULTI-MILLION pound housing development is planned on a former coal mining site.

AWG Property and Cemex have applied for permission to build 270 family homes on a 30 acre brownfield site at Cardowan colliery on the outskirts of Glasgow.

The £50million scheme will result in a 10 acre landscaped park being built.

The site is located close to the Crowwood roundabout in Stepps where the A80 from Stirling meets the M80 into Glasgow.

Around 400 new homes have been built on the site, but the land where the new development is planned has been lying empty for years.

A company spokesman said: "The proposed site has become a local eyesore since ground remediation work was completed following the closure of the colliery and local residents are keen to see the area transformed to enhance its visual appeal.

"The application represents the final phase of redevelopment at the former industrial site and the proposals will facilitate the development of much needed family housing in an area that has become increasingly popular."

As the site straddles the boundary of Glasgow City Council and North Lanarkshire Council it will need the go-ahead from both authorities.

AWG Property managing director Tony Donnelly said: "This development will include a significant proportion of much-needed family housing, which should help first-time buyers with young families onto the housing ladder whilst building on the success of the existing redevelopment at Cardowan.

"Local people are keen the area is improved as it has become untidy since the initial remediation work was carried out.

"We believe the proposals will deliver a development which will meet the growing demand for family accommodation in the area while complementing the existing modern developments nearby and removing a local eyesore from their doorstep."
