A NEW £1.4million day centre for the elderly was being officially opened in Glasgow today.

Muirhead Road Day Care Centre, in Baillieston, will provide 25 places every day for frail pensioners and those with dementia.

East Glasgow Community Health and Care partnership will manage the centre, which was funded through a council grant.

The centre aims to provide a modern approach to day care and offers a variety of rooms for rehabilitation activities.

Councillor Jim Coleman, who opened the centre today said: "The new facilities are superb and will make a real difference to the quality of life for local elderly people."

The day centre will be open seven days a week, all year round.

Mark Feinmann, director of East Glasgow CHCP, said: "This centre and the services it will provide are key elements in avoiding the need for institutional care and will help people to continue to live in their own homes."
