A driver was caught after doing 126mph on the M8 - and then found to be over the alcohol limit.

He was among three drivers caught clocking up more than 100mph during a weekend crackdown on speeding by Strathclyde Police.

One was stopped for doing 102mph on the A77, while the other hit 106 mph on the Glasgow Southern Orbital Road.

Six male drivers, whose ages ranged from 20 to 61, were also arrested for being over the limit after their manner of driving alerted police.

One 21-year-old was caught on a motorbike in a playpark and also on Onslow Road, Clydebank. As well as being over the alcohol limit, he had been disqualified from driving and had no insurance.

The offences were committed during the Rural Road Awareness Weekend, which was organised by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland.

Chief Constable John Vine will chair a one-day talk-in next month to look at ways of getting safety messages across to young drivers.

He said the number of people killed in road traffic accidents had dropped, but added: "Seven out of ten fatal accidents in Scotland are on rural roads.

"It seems there is a hard core of drivers, particularly young drivers, who ignore legislation and common sense. They will be caught - hopefully, before they kill someone."
