A BODYGUARD to the former premier of Pakistan was jailed for eight years today for raping a vulnerable 21-year-old woman in Glasgow.

The High Court in the city heard that Ghulam Abbas, 37, a former elite cop, is now an illegal immigrant.

Sentencing him, Judge Rita Rae said: "Rape is an appalling crime. You took advantage of a young woman in a very vulnerable state. It must have been obvious to you she was wearing very flimsy clothing, was barefoot and had no idea where she was.

"You obviously are an intelligent man. You got her into your flat on the pretence of helping her, gave her more alcohol then raped her when she was in no position to resist. You also kept her in your flat against her will."

Judge Rae placed Abbas on the sex offenders' register and told him that she was going to recommend that he should be deported from Britain.

Abbas was convicted of rape and attempting to defeat the ends of justice by fleeing to England.

The court heard that he saw the scantily-dressed woman outside his flat at 4am on March 17 last year as he returned from work as a security guard at Buchanan Bus station.

He got her into his flat after telling her he would lend her a pair of trainers.

Hours after the rape Abbas fled to England.

The woman said she had been drinking heavily during a night out with friends and became separated from them.

She couldn't remember going into Abbas' flat and said she woke up to find him having sex with her.

Abbas, who claimed the woman consented to sex, told the court he had been a personal bodyguard to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
