KATE Moss used the unlikely setting of the Brit Awards to plead for Scotland to stay in the UK.

The superstar model picked up David Bowie's award for best British male award at the ceremony in London.

She told the audience: David has asked me to say this. I'm completely delighted to have a Brit for being the best male - but I am, aren't I Kate?

"Yes. I think it's a great way to end the day. Thank you very, very much and Scotland stay with us."

Moss wore one of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust outfits to collect the prize.

Singer Ellie Goulding was named best British female star. The 27-year-old - who scored her first number one last year with Burn - took the trophy four years after collecting her first Brit.

The ceremony is the biggest night in the UK music calendar with dozens of stars and thousands of fans gathered at the O2 Arena in London.

She said: "Thank you so much - I genuinely am in shock - I'm not very good at this at all. This means so much to me - I can't even tell you."

The Arctic Monkeys collected the best album prize in addition to their best group title. It is the third time in which they collected the best album and best group prizes at the Brits.

Frontman Alex Turner accepted the prize with a philosophical ramble, telling the audience: "That rock and roll it just won't go away - it might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swamp."

US star Bruno Mars was named best international male act, an award he had previously collected in 2012.

After accepting the prize from Kylie Minogue - who wore a knee-length black rubber dress - and Pharrell Williams, Mars told the audience: "I want to thank the fans. We love coming out here, we love performing for you all."

Four-piece act Bastille collected the prize for best British breakthrough, beating acts such as Disclosure and London Grammar.

Singer Dan Smith said: "This time last year I don't think anyone in this room including us even thought we would be here."

One Direction suffered a toilet mishap when Harry Styles was still visiting the loo while the rest of his group was collecting the band's global success award.

When they took the stage as a four-piece, the group's Liam Payne asked: "Has anyone seen the curly haired lad? I don't know where you are Harry."

Rudimental collected the award for best British single for their song Waiting All Night, which featured Ella Eyre.

Guitarist and producer Nile Rodgers collected the best group award on behalf of French duo Daft Punk who did not attend the ceremony.

Performers included Beyonce who took the stage alone wearing a green sequinned, floor-length dress to sing her track XO.

Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams rounded off the performance with a medley of hits including Daft Punk's Get Lucky and Williams's chart-topping and Oscar-nominated single Happy.
