X Factor star and singing sensation Melanie Masson is to join the cast of this year's family pantomime, Cinderella, as Fairy Godmother.

Melanie, who will star alongside John Barrowman and The Krankies, became a household name as one of four contestants to be mentored by Gary Barlow in the 2012 season of X Factor after stunning the public and judges with her audition rendition of Janis Joplin's Cry Baby.

The singer is no stranger to the stage having trained at Queen Margaret College of Music and Drama in Edinburgh, and performed in the West End and on national tour in production including The Rise and Fall of Little Voice in the title role of LV, Jailhouse Rock The Musical, Peggy Sue Got Married, What A Feeling, Hold Tight It's 60s Night and at the Edinburgh Festival as Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Maria in Twelfth Night.

She was recently nominated for a Capital FM/Scottish Variety Award for best newcomer and is currently working on her first solo album.

Cinderella is produced by Qdos Entertainment, the world's largest pantomime producer, the company behind the critically-acclaimed pantomimes staged at the SECC over the past four years.

Jonathan Kiley, executive producer of Cinderella, said "As anyone who followed Melanie's performances in X Factor will know she has a powerhouse voice which is absolutely first-class and a loving warm personality ideally suited to the role of Fairy Godmother. I'm absolutely thrilled that she has agreed to join us in her home City in Glasgow's biggest pantomime".

Allan Snedden, head of concert and event sales, added: "It's fantastic to be adding another Scot to the bill this year. Melanie certainly won over The X Factor crowds and I've no doubt she'll do the same with our spirited Glasgow audience - we are delighted to welcome her to the stage!"

Cinderella at the SECC Clyde Auditorium runs from Saturday, December 13, to Sunday, January 4, 2015.
