RADIO 1 bosses hope their all-star careers academy will help city teenagers realise their full potential.

The week-long event, organised by the Big Weekend hosts, features famous faces including billionaire business man Sir Richard Branson as well as home-grown talent comedian Kevin Bridges and rock band Biffy Clyro.

The academy - which kicks off in Glasgow University's Queen Margaret Union tomorrow, also features former student - singer/songwriter Emeli Sande.

The stars will take part in workshops, Q&A sessions and masterclasses to share their expert knowledge and spur on the next generation of entrepreneurs and performers.

A total of 7000 local 16 to 19-year-olds will take part in the event.

Piers Bradford, commissioner at Radio 1, oversees the academy.

He said: "We want the young people of Glasgow to come along and get inspired about what to do with their futures.

"We want them to get practical experience that will help them achieve their goals, but also experience new things that will build their confidence."

He added: "It is vital that Radio 1 continues to reflect all aspects of our audience's lives.

"We are there to talk about the music, the gigs, the entertainment but it is equally important that we are there for the more serious bits too.

"If we can help any of the participants achieve their dreams then the whole event will have been worthwhile."

Radio 1 will broadcast live shows across the seven days of Radio 1's Academy posting videos, links and clips online.

The station will also bring BBC Radio 1 presenters including Nick Grimshaw, Fearne Cotton, Scott Mills and Greg James to cover the academy and they will also participate in various workshops.

As well as getting advice from those who have made it big, local teenagers will also get tips on how to get your foot in the door from those just starting out in the world of media, film and TV, music and comedy.

The Big Weekend takes place on May 23-25 in Glasgow Green.
