STAR Wars star Harrison Ford has a suspected broken ankle after being injured on the set of the latest instalment of the sci-fi series.

The 71-year-old suffered the injury at Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire, where the latest instalment of the franchise - Star Wars: Episode VII - is being filmed.

Disney, which owns Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars, confirmed that Ford was airlifted to hospital in Oxford after the incident, which police said involved a garage door.

A spokesman for Disney added: "Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates."

Filming began last month, with original cast members of the Star Wars Trilogy Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher joining Ford, who plays Han Solo.
