Scottish actor David Tennant will return to Doctor Who for a new series of audio plays.

Catherine Tate will also join Tennant as companion Donna Noble in the three new audio plays.

Fans of the pair will, however, have to wait until May, 2017 when Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures will be released.

The series, from Big Finish, will include three hour-long audio adventures including Technophobia by Matt Fitton, Time Reaver by Jenny T Colgan and Death and the Queen by James Goss.

Big Finish, who are producers of audio drama based on classic Doctor Who since 1999,  have recently been branching out into new series material, with stories featuring UNIT, River Song and John Hurt's War Doctor.

The plays mark Tennant, who played the part from 2005 to 2010, first appearance as the Tenth Doctor since 2013's Doctor Who anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor.

Tate made an initial guest appearance on Doctor Who in 2006, returning as a series regular for one series in 2008. She last appeared on the series in 2010.

Producer David Richardson told Digital Spy: "This is one of those dream projects where I've spent months pinching myself - I'm covered in bruises.
'With two major international stars in place, and the legacy of this era of the TV show to live up to, we've worked our socks off to try and make some very special stories for this box set. Expect adventure, fun, scares... and some tears too."
