IT’S approaching that time of the year when every journalist has to start thinking about their end-of-year lists.
If we make it to December without Turkey and Russia going to war and me being drafted up, there will always be a spot reserved for Nice N Sleazy in my “Best Boozers in Glasgow” listicle.
The Sauchiehall Street venue recently passed the quarter-century mark, a feat of longevity that is easy to overlook. It’s just that Sleazy’s, as it’s called colloquially, is part of the landscape: it feels as if it’s never not been there.
The club is an indie landmark, so it wears the “dive bar” badge with pride.
The downstairs club is a low-ceilinged sweatbox with a tatty red décor, while the toilets are contentedly clatty. There’s something interesting on almost every night of the week: from film nights to metal gigs to weird, experimental house parties.
Some of my favourite nights ever have been here. I’ve been pummelled by The Twilight Sad’s excoriating noise, and danced on an empty floor as one of my best friends spun deep house tunes on an impromptu Thursday night session.
I fell asleep in the corner after pulling an all-nighter the day of my dissertation deadline.
Who knew that a burger and several White Russians would make it difficult to stay awake?
Sleazy’s has always been there for me. It was here for Glasgow’s indie elder statesmen who came before me, and it will be there for generations of alternative-minded youth to come. We should cherish it.
