ORGANISERS of a major arts festival have launched an online fundraising campaign in a bid to create a new city venue for the event artists and appreciators alike.

The social club for Glasgow International 2016 has set up a Kickstarter page, asking for donations that will hopefully add up to its target of £25,000 by the deadline of Christmas Eve.

The money will be used to help create a flexible space for next year’s festival, which takes place between April 8-25.

As well as being a venue for new performances, there are also plans to host various events and screenings in the new area, as well as encouraging lively debates. Another key use will be as a socialising space, where artists, visitors, and curators can spend time together at the end of the day’s events, while enjoying a drink and music and art performances.

Plans are already afoot on designs for the venue, with Scottish-Italian designer Gabriella Marcella and furniture designer Damian Kruse getting on board with their artistic inspiration.

Pledgers will receive a variety of rewards for donations made, ranging from T-shirts and bags designed by Gabriella Marcella, limited edition photographs by artist Tessa Lynch, to a unique piece of work by Turner Prize-nominated artist Marvin Gaye Chetwynd.

The biennial art festival has grown dramatically since it first began in 2008.

Next year’s looks set to be visual extravaganza , with the line up so far consisting of performance work by Lauren Gault and Zoe Miller, an evening presented by the Glasgow Women’s Library, and music performances by a variety of Glasgow-based artists, including JD Twitch from classic club night Optimo.

The full programme of events will be announced nearer the time, and organisers plan to post recordings and images online for those who will not be able to attend the festival.

Sarah McCrory, director of Glasgow International 2016, said: “We realised the festival didn’t have a space of its own.  We make shows all over the city in other people’s galleries and organisations, and we wanted a place we could open which was full of interesting and exciting events and talks and music, which is open to everyone, for free.

“It’s important we have a dynamic place to enjoy what Glasgow has to offer during the festival.”
