New Year, new logo?
That seems to be the case for BBC Three, who unveiled a new logo for the channel – to very mixed reactions.
The new BBC Three Logo (BBC)
In November 2015 it was announced that the channel would be moving online for good.
However, the new logo has drawn a few rather mixed reactions.
Mostly though, people are comparing it to a logo from hit TV show, W1A.
And it’s a comparison the channel doesn’t seem to mind as they also confirm that BBC Three will go online as of 16 February.
BBC Three’s head of marketing, Nikki Carr, has written a blog post explaining the new logo – and referred directly to the TV show.
Nikki said: “Thanks to W1A we’re cursed at the BBC when it comes to marketing and I don’t want to come across all Siobhan Sharpe but forgive me some lingo. The visual identity brings new BBC Three together – a new logo, new idents, new animations and new on screen presentation, all with a new colour pallete. This visual identity will underpin what we do in the future.”

“What is most striking is the new logo and the fact it doesn’t actually say three.
“It’s easy to belittle the importance a logo has in supporting a brand, and I’m sure the usual critics will have their say – ‘It looks like Adidas’, ‘it looks like a ‘hamburger menu icon’, ‘it doesn’t even say three’, ‘are they Roman numerals?’ – but, if I’m being honest, I’m not worried.
“Some people are resistant to change and we wanted to be bold and create something that looks forward and will be around for years to come.”
So, here’s that W1A logo everyone is comparing it to:

When in Rome?
Not convinced by the new BBC Three logo. Looks like 2 in Roman Numerals and an exclamation mark. #W1A pic.twitter.com/MlTfm6clVw

The polite way of saying you find something offensive…
The new @bbcthree logo is unspeakably terrible. pic.twitter.com/t4R5G4YN4Z

But then again, some people find it bold…
New #BBCThree logo. Eye-catching and says something about its content, which can't be said for most channel logos! pic.twitter.com/5DNMUk05xj

For some it’s all about the dimensions…
The new BBC Three logo doesn't line up and it's really annoying. Fortunately I don't watch BBC II! pic.twitter.com/bdy4zrJ2J9
