They may have amassed legions of famous fans and appeared on screen with Dustin Hoffman but Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are keeping their feet firmly on the ground.

Once described as 'a gift to those of us who still believe in magic', the sibling trio's unusual fusion of rock 'n' roll, R&B, jazz, soul, ska and blues has definitely caught the music world's attention, with Coldplay and Mark Ronson among those singing their praises.

However, multi-instrumentalist Lewis Durham says that the family band from London never set out to be unconventional.

"We've never tried to be unique or different, we've just done what has come naturally to us," he says. "However, I think the fact that we are a whole family is probably quite unique."

Never ones to follow the crowd, the band, who have sold over a quarter of a million records worldwide, recorded their new album, The Third, on analogue studio equipment in a derelict Indian Restaurant in London.

As if that wasn't enough, they also brought family friend and The Clash's guitarist Mick Jones along for the ride.

Lewis says the decision to use a derelict space rather than a traditional recording studio and equipment many consider archaic gave them much more freedom and space to explore their sound.

"Working in our own space was a great benefit as it meant there were no time constraints or stress," he says.

"Mick's a joy to work with, he brought a great energy into the room and created a vibe.

"The main change for us when we built the studio was the room, having a larger space to work with can change results immensely.

"Pop records can't be made now without the aid of digital tools, the computer's become an instrument for making music rather than just capturing it. However, since we're not doing any of those things yet, I felt sticking to analogue recording equipment wouldn't be a bad thing."

However, it's not just their approach to recording that sets them apart, it's their willingness not to be tied to one instrument, with each member gliding around the group's musical toy box with effortless ease.

"We grew up with different instruments around so we would just play different things at different times," Lewis says. "When it came to the stage, for certain songs we just naturally went to an instrument which felt right for it.

"I think it's great to be able to switch around between songs because everyone has their own way of playing each instrument so it can give a song a whole different feel depending on who's playing what."

The band has gained quite a following since they started out in 2000 and have toured with Coldplay, Stereophonics and Mark Ronson.

However, as nice as the attention is, Lewis says that these music stars are just like any other fan.

"It's always nice to know that people are fans whether they are musicians or not," he says. "It can be surprising sometimes but, they're just ordinary people after all!

"When we toured with Coldplay, we were jamming with Chris and he just wanted to play music. It made him late for his show!"

The group's music has also made the leap onto the big screen, appearing on the soundtracks of shows and films including Beautiful Kate and Welcome to the Riley's.

The band even got the chance to make a guest appearance alongside Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson in Last Chance Harvey.

"The director wanted to use a song of ours in the film," says Lewis. "He then saw a video and found out we were a family so he wrote a scene so he could put us in the picture.

"It was a great day. Meeting Dustin was amazing as we used to watch Hook when we were kids. There's nothing like meeting Captain Hook in real life!"

The trio are now preparing to play Edinburgh's Electric Circus on February 2 before heading back into the studio to work on their next record.

"This is our last tour for this album so we will be playing mainly songs from 'The Third'," Lewis says.

"We will have legendary trumpeter Edward ‘Tan Tan’ Thornton playing an absolutely brilliant piece of work with us so that's sure to make everyone smile."

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis will play at The Electric Circus in Edinburgh in February 2.
