YouTube superstar Zoella has got her finger on the pulse of all things millennial, but not, it seems, on the world of ageing rock stars.
She posted a snap of a “random man” playing on the beach with his dog and decided it was too cute not to share with her 7.2 million followers – unfortunately the random man turned out to be Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.
She captioned it: “I took this photo of a random man & his dog & other photos on the beach at sunset today!”
David’s wife, novelist Polly Samson, was alerted to the picture by their daughter and decided to share it on Twitter, despite Zoella posting the picture over a year ago.
Look at this random man! (JK it’s David Gilmour) (Joel Ryan/AP)
Of course, her innocent mistake soon went viral, with responses ranging from people thinking it was “hilarious and sweet” (Lauren Laverne) to Floyd fans raging to her error.
Luckily Polly saw the funny side of it.
Daughter's just drawn my attention to this "random man" on Zoella's… https://t.co/KgH3LzqulF

To be fair #randomman had no idea who the #randomyoungthings were either. @Zoella LOVELY pic btw. https://t.co/owJe7Dawrg

Zoella wrote on her blog at the time: “I also took these snaps of a man and his dog. I don’t know this man, or his dog, but I feel like I captured a few moments between them that were too precious not to share. If you know this man, let him know these pictures exist as they may make him smile!”
Did they make David smile? Polly’s yet to update us.
But maybe Zoella can be forgiven for not immediately recognising David as the band had released 13 of their 15 studio albums before the 25-year-old was even born.
