SCOTS electro rockers Chvrches are quite literally the hottest band in the world right now.

For the trio, made up of singer Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, who are famed for using synthesizers had to cancel a show after their equipment melted in the Australian sun.

The Glasgow band’s backing musician Martin explained, “In Australia, a piece of equipment melted in the sun and we had to cancel our show. Let’s hope we don’t have to do that again

“That first Barras show was also hotter than the sun and we were really terrified that the computers were going to break that night.

“The temperature in that room I can’t even remember. I can’t imagine what it was – it was crazy. I’m hoping for a nice smooth run at the Hydro.”

The band’s homecoming show at the SSE Hydro on April 2 will be their biggest to date in the city and Martin couldn’t be more excited.

He beamed, “This is our first time at the SSE Hydro and I couldn’t be more excited to be honest. It’s been a long time since we played in Glasgow.

“It was really important to us to make a statement show in our home city. Glasgow is a place that is really close to my heart.

“When we were first putting this band together, we used to drive past that venue and look down as they were finishing the construction, and I never really believed we would be playing in it. It is a big moment for us, probably the biggest moment we have ever had.”

Martin’s former band Twilight Sad will be supporting the Chvrches on the night. He describes them as “one of the most important Scottish bands of all time”, and admits he is hugely excited about their support slot.

He said: “We’ve got Twilight Sad at the SSE Hydro and I am hugely excited to have a band supporting that are really close to my heart.

“Even as a listener I think they are one of the most important Scottish bands of all time. I can say that because I never really wrote any of the music in the band.

“I stuck with that band for three and a half years. I just loved their music and I loved the people.

“It’s good to have them out. See them doing well, they’re back on tour going up to the next level with The Cure for the rest of the year after they do the show. Good times for the Sad.”

The gig will also be an important one for Glasgow Women’s Aid who will benefit from a charity donation from ticket sales. Charity is big on the band’s agenda as Martin explained, “It’s something that is very important for us to give something back. We do contribute a lot to charity when we can.“

Since launching on to the scene in 2011, Chvrches seem to have taken over the world with pop star Justin Bieber even singing their praises after the band performed a cover of his hit What Do You Mean on Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

Martin joked, “That was funny. The Bieber seal of approval. It was just one of those things, it was for Radio 1, and it was for the Live Lounge. They always ask you to do a cover and we’ve got pretty good at covers because we do a lot of these radio stations and they are always asking for one. I was pretty surprised when Bieber wrote to us. I think the last time we did Justin Timberlake as well and he retweeted it so we are two for two in the megastars.”

The band, however, will not be doing covers and focusing on their Chvrches material for the SSE Hydro show as Martin explained they have enough of their own stuff now.

He said: “We will be playing a few newer songs which we haven’t played. There will be no covers. We used to do covers when we didn’t have enough songs. We were playing these big shows and we had one album’s worth of material which would really only amount to 45 minutes, not enough for a set so we would play covers then. But now we have got enough material to get through, we just really stick to the album.”

After the Hydro show, Chvrches is bound to be the name on every music fan’s lips for this year’s T in the Park – but the band admit they haven’t been asked yet.

Martin said: There is nothing confirmed this year for T although obviously it’s our home turf and it’s our home festival. We were proud to be involved in T in the early years and we have been lucky enough to play it in the past.”
