Aled Jones is delighted that his new album has overtaken Adele’s 25 in the best-seller charts – impressing his disbelieving children.

One Voice features the last recordings of Jones as a boy soprano, which were never released as his voice broke shortly afterwards.

After rediscovering the recordings, Aled came up with a unique concept: he would duet with himself as a child.

The album, featuring classics such as Danny Boy and Eriskay Love Lilt, overtook Adele in the Amazon best-seller chart on Friday.

Aled said: “It’s amazing, I’m ahead of her in the chart, which is somewhere I’ve never been in my life before. I look at it every half hour because I can’t quite believe it.”

The 45-year-old Classic FM presenter is father to 10-year-old Lucas and 14-year-old Doctor Who actress Emilia.

He said: “They love music. They don’t tend to listen to mine very much, because they don’t really care what I do, as long as I earn enough money to buy Lego and new trainers.

“They’ve always just thought of me as dad; they don’t get impressed by concerts or tours or albums or whatever I do on TV and radio.

“Although my son was quite impressed that his dad was ahead of Adele in the chart. That was pretty amazing for him.

“But he thought it was a mistake.”

Aled has found himself becoming more attached to his younger self – having spent decades avoiding listening to the 16 albums he released as a child.

He said: “I didn’t listen to any of my music as a kid, and there are still albums that I’ve released that I’ve never heard.

“Whereas this one has been totally different – I’ve listened and listened and listened.”

He added: “It’s been a lovely experience for me, just to be able to sing along with The Boy as I call him, because it’s the first time I’ve looked back and I can kind of feel vaguely proud about what I did as a kid.”

Aled discovered the forgotten recordings almost by accident, when he was chatting with his parents and they mentioned in passing that they had a DAT (digital audio tape) in the airing cupboard keeping dry.

He recalled: “Off my mum went to the airing cupboard, and came back with this DAT, and dad went to watch the rugby because he doesn’t care about things like that, and my mum and I shared the headphones, one bud each, and listened to the entire album.

“And I thought ‘Cor blimey, I should do something with this, it’s amazing’.”

Aled is soon to set off on his Cathedral Tour 2016, where fans will be able to hear their old favourites as well as highlights from his new album.

He said: “This album is a way of drawing a line under the past, as well. I wouldn’t want to duet with myself forever.

“But there was this opportunity to do it, and it was nice. It was almost as if the young boy is handing on the baton now to the old Aled.”
