Captain America has found a worthy competitor in a bunch of flightless birds.

The Angry Birds Movie – which features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Maya Rudolph – soared to $39 million (£28.9 million) in its debut weekend in the US, knocking Captain America: Civil War off its first place perch.

Civil War earned an additional $33.1 million (£22.8 million) for a second place spot, bringing its total in America to $347.4 million (£239.4 million).

Even in its third weekend in cinemas, the superhero caper proved mightier than new adult comedies Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising and The Nice Guys, which took the third and fourth spots.

Neighbours 2 brought in $21.8 million (£15 million) in its debut weekend – less than half of the first film’s $49 million (£33.7 million) opening in 2014.

The 70s throwback buddy comedy The Nice Guys, starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, grossed $11.3 million (£7.8 million).
