Pop star Olly Murs has said he was not given a fair chance to succeed in his X Factor presenting role, which left him restricted in what he could say “because it’s a family show”.

The You Don’t Know Love singer, 32, who co-presented with 36-year-old Caroline Flack, told The Sun on Sunday: “Caroline and I felt we could do something different, but I don’t personally believe we were allowed to be different.

“Sometimes it felt like we were reading the script that Dermot (O’Leary) would have done the year before.”

The Essex entertainer also discussed his forthcoming album, due for release in November. He said he played a dozen songs from it to ex-girlfriend Francesca, 27, to get her approval as she had inspired them.

He quit the presenting role on the show which made him famous in February, after just one year on the job.

Olly shot to stardom with his performances on The X Factor in 2009, when he finished second before carving out a career in music and television.
