Veteran actor Jack Riley – who voiced Stu Pickles on cartoon series Rugrats – has died aged 80.

Jack was well known to American television viewers for his role as neurotic patient Elliot Carlin on 1970s sitcom The Bob Newhart Show.

But his voice was recognised by a new generation in the 1990s after playing absent-minded dad Stu on Nickelodeon animation Rugrats.

Jack appeared in a number of Mel Brooks’ films including Spaceballs, History of the World: Part I and High Anxiety.

He also voiced commercials and made guest appearances on TV series Seinfeld, Night Court and Diff’rent Strokes.

Jack died in a Los Angeles hospital on Friday, his representative said. He is survived by his wife Ginger Lawrence, two children and grandchildren.
