BLOC has been a mainstay of the independent music scene for so long now that it’s difficult to remember the days before it.

But, rather than diminishing in importance as time goes on, this bar has only grown more revered with age. Like Bill Murray, it keeps adding strings to its bow and getting better as the years pass.

Its new kitchen, Furious Food, is a case in point.

The chef, Danny McLaren - better known by his alter ego, The Mad Chef - is a character straight out of a Comedy Unit pilot.

A whirling, babbling ball of energy, his food reflects a singular vision where no two items cannot be deliciously combined.

Whether sticking a Pot Noodle inside a burger or fusing pulled pork and Irn-Bru, McLaren is pretty far from your average Garnethill gourmand - but his food has attracted a groundswell of adoration from bloggers, journalists and the public alike.

The addition of Mad Chef Audio Beef - a tasting menu-centered club night - to his repertoire is further proof that the juggernaut shows no sign of slowing.

At its most recent edition, McLaren flitted between preparing tacos and frozen margaritas in the kitchen, and going tonto out on the floor dressed as a Mexican wrestler.

It’s that slightly unhinged element that has always made Bloc so exciting and unpredictable - you don’t know whether you’re going to find a secret gig, a culinary masterclass or a hipster dance party every time you walk through the door.

Which, of course, should be the gold standard for any truly great boozer.
